FAMILY MEETINGS

Peer Support Rooted in Healing Justice for Families Impacted by Incarceration and Police Violence

Dignity & Power Now's (DPN) Family Meetings provide safe, supportive, healing, and politically active spaces for families impacted by incarceration, police violence, and the broader carceral system.

This monthly healing justice program offers trauma-informed care, community empowerment, and leadership development through therapeutic storytelling, artistic expression, and holistic healing.

What began in 2018 with two impacted DPN family members turned organizers and just a few families has since grown into a strong, supportive community of over thirty members.

Families find peer-to-peer emotional support, connection, and empowerment. Many have gone on to become canvassers, volunteers, and frontline organizers advancing Dignity and Power Now’s abolitionist campaigns and justice reform work.

Voices of dignity & power

"I am an active member of Dignity and Power Now as well as JusticeLA. I regularly attend the DPN Family Meetings. My son has severe mental health issues and has been arrested and incarcerated for years instead of receiving the mental health services that he needs and deserves.

This group has supported me in navigating the carceral system and in being able to advocate for my son to be connected to alternatives to incarceration. Additionally, I have been able to help other people that I have met through the support group that have similar lived experiences. "

"I have been a member with DPN since 2019 and I would like to say that this is my second family and I enjoy the family support, Family Meetings, and online and in-person. Throughout the years, I have grown to be able to share and participate to help families and the community about learning how to stand up for our families that are incarcerated or have passed away due to police brutality or corruption.

Being able to attend OIG meetings and board meetings in downtown Los Angeles and participating online discussions has helped me grow as a person. I have returned back to school to pursue my law degree and hope to be able to help our DPN families in need with legal situations."
- Tupea
"I knew about DPN but not what they stood for entirely. When my son was murdered by LASD almost 5 years ago, DPN reached out to me after hearing me tell my story to the BOS. Here came support that I never knew existed.

I would not have been able to navigate through [this process] on my own. I learned so much here about advocacy. We became friends and family. Being an elder in DPN it makes me hopeful that we will win our fight against the harms of incarceration. You all make me proud."

Family Meetings - Dignity & Power Now

    built from lived experiences

Family Meetings began in the summer of 2018, rooted in profound loss and resilience. Helen Jones and Sahara White, who would later become staff at Dignity and Power Now, each lost loved ones to the trauma of incarceration and police violence.

From their grief, they envisioned a safe, healing space where families could come together, find understanding, and build collective power. Family Meetings were created as a supportive gathering for those with incarcerated family members or those who have experienced state violence, loss of life, or the ongoing harm of the carceral system.

Centered in healing justice, the space offers court support, access to ancestral practices, breathing exercises, and connection to nature. More than a support group, this space empower families to find their voices, take political action, and stand together in the fight for abolition and transformative justice.
