2025 Juneteenth Editorial: Incarcerated Labor Is Rooted in Slavery

A Juneteenth Reminder from us—Incarcerated labor and immigrant exploitation are rooted in slavery.

Juneteenth celebrates the emancipation of enslaved people in Texas on June 19, 1865. California voted AGAINST abolishing slavery just 8 months ago with Prop 6. Many see CA as a haven for progressive values and equity— the expansion of enslaved labor is a convenient blind spot with widespread impacts.

Additionally, the exploitation of immigrants (especially those who are undocumented) persists in California and is often defended with the same arguments used to justify slavery—by both leftists and conservatives. Regardless of economic contributions, everyone deserves dignity and freedom from violence.

Period.
